Let’s say you’ve recently planted an apple tree sapling so you can enjoy fresh, delicious apples straight from your yard. Or perhaps you’ve planted oak saplings all around the house to liven up the scenery. Then the winter rolls along; strong winds and below-zero temperatures weigh down your tree branches. Root damage occurs because the soil keeps expanding and contracting from freezing weather. These are just a few of the ways a mid-Missouri winter can ruin your newly planted trees. Braik’s Tree Care knows the ins and outs of keeping your trees alive, and we promise to make sure none of this happens to your garden.
Taking the right steps now means you will have a beautiful yard when springtime approaches! Don’t put off properly caring for your trees in Mid-Missouri. Make sure your trees are prepped for unpredictable winter weather by following Braik Tree Care’s top tips!
Water Your New Tree: This simple tactic is super effective before the winter. Since new trees don’t have a fully developed root system, they’re going to need some extra assistance starting out. Simply water your newly planted tree before the ground freezes, and they will be less likely to dry out over the winter.
Insulate With Mulch: Place a layer of mulch approximately four inches thick around your tree, spreading about two feet from the trunk. This keeps the temperature of the soil from getting too cold and harming the roots. Do not, however, let the mulch come in contact with the trunk of the tree. Too much can suffocate the roots!
Wrap the Tree: The bark of your newly planted tree can suffer from dryness and cracking over the harsh mid-Missouri winter. You can buy wraps made of polypropylene fabric or paper and use them to protect the young trees.
Remove Dead Branches: During the winter, when tree growth begins to slow, it’s best to get rid of damaged or dead branches on your new tree. This is known as pruning. The dead branches can drain the tree’s energy and possibly spread disease. Braik’s Tree Care can assist you with this kind of practice if you’re not quite sure what you’re doing.
