Fall is finally here! Before celebrating too soon, though, you need to make sure your trees are safe from the wildlife of mid-Missouri. When the weather cools down in autumn, deer will rub their antlers on tree bark and eat at the foliage. Rodents like rats and voles will eat the tree bark in your yard if given the chance. Stop them now with these preventative tree care tips!
First of all, if you don’t already have a fence surrounding your mid-Missouri yard, it may be time to consider one, especially if deer are present in your area. A woven wire or stockade fence 6 to 10 feet tall should work, and you can also try double fencing so they don’t feel brave and attempt to jump over.
A fence may prevent deer, but rodents are good at sneaking around and climbing into mid-Missouri yards. In this case, it’s a good idea to wrap a trunk protector around your trees to keep animals from eating at it. The most accessible tree guards are plastic, but you can also find mesh, concrete, and wooden tree guards in the Columbia, MO area.
For new trees, you will definitely need to protect the buds from hungry deer and critters. If these animals destroy the terminal buds on your young trees, it will be very difficult for them to recover. Simply take a piece of paper, wrap it around the ends of branches with buds, and secure it together with a stapler. You will need to keep these bud caps on through the winter as well.
